Introduction: The Journey Begins

Every great journey starts with a single step. For Lūmaix, that step began years before the term “AI-driven content marketing” was even a concept. It began with curiosity, creativity, and a drive to help others succeed.

In this first blog of our three-part series, we delve into the roots of Lūmaix. Before AI, prompt engineering, or custom tools existed, there was a foundation built on diverse skills, relentless learning, and a commitment to solving problems for businesses and creators. This is where the story begins.

Education and Early Professional Development

Building a Diverse Skill Set

The foundation of Lūmaix is deeply rooted in the diverse educational and professional background of, Jason Richardson, Founder of Lūmaix. With a BA in International Relations and an MFA focused on abstract painting and design, my journey started at the intersection of critical thinking and creativity. Years ago I leveraged my BA studies to break into California government and politics. Later, I left politics and dove head first into my life-long passion to become a painter. After living as a working artist, I decided to return to school and discipline my practice in fine art. Combining what I learned from these two experiences taught me to view challenges through multiple lenses—a skill that would later prove invaluable in marketing and business strategy.

As I entered digital marketing, I obtained several key certifications in digital marketing, UI/UX design, and SEO. These credentials weren’t just boxes to check; they were tools to understand better how to connect with audiences, design impactful campaigns, and build engaging user experiences.

What is UI/UX Design?

UI (User Interface) design focuses on how a website or app looks, including layout, colors, and typography, while UX (User Experience) design is about how it feels to use. Think of UI as the storefront of a shop and UX as the experience of walking in, finding what you need, and checking out with ease. Together, they ensure that users enjoy interacting with your digital presence, keeping them engaged and coming back for more.

Professional Beginnings

Early in my career, I honed my skills in communications strategy. Working in state politics, with local organizations and small businesses, I developed campaigns that weren’t just effective but also meaningful. I learned to:

  • Identify key audience needs and tailor messaging accordingly.

  • Balance creative expression with practical business goals.

  • Deliver results that build trust and long-term relationships.

One standout project involved working on a statewide political campaign, where I worked in the press and communications team to monitor opposition and craft our candidate's messaging. In this role, I saw how combining a meaningful opposition strategy with creative, impactful messaging, we created campaign messages that delivered the campaign a victory in the fall election.

This period of growth was pivotal, setting the stage for what would later become the core ethos of Lūmaix: blending creativity with strategy to solve real-world problems.

Navigating Digital Marketing and Communications

From Strategy to Execution

The transition into digital marketing coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, I was responding to the situation to provide for my family and our baby girl. This shift wasn’t just about learning new tools; it was about applying strategic thinking in a rapidly evolving and uncertain environment.

One of my first major projects during this period involved helping a local restaurant transform its digital presence. The pandemic had shut their doors to dine-in customers, leaving them scrambling to adapt. I worked closely with their team to:

  • Revamp Their Online Presence: Updating menus, adding delivery options, and integrating online ordering functionality.

  • Leverage Social Media: Creating engaging posts that highlighted safety measures, promoted specials, and shared personal stories about their staff.

  • Optimize for Search: Ensuring their business appeared prominently in local search results, helping customers find them when it mattered most.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO involves optimizing a business’s online presence to attract more customers from relevant local searches. For example, when someone searches for “pizza near me” or “best local coffee shop,” businesses optimized for local SEO are more likely to appear at the top of the results. This includes creating or refining a Google My Business profile, integrating location-specific keywords, and encouraging customer reviews.

The results were transformative. The restaurant maintained customer loyalty and attracted new patrons who discovered them online. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of digital strategy to sustain and grow businesses, even in challenging times.

Creativity Meets Strategy: The Artist’s Perspective

The Role of Art in Business

As a professional artist, I’ve sold works to collectors across California. From studio visits to word-of-mouth commissions, I have been truly blessed to have received the validation of others. And, while I feel truly blessed to continue to have a working studio, this creative journey has also taught me several valuable lessons that have informed my current path:

  • Communicate abstract ideas in ways that resonate emotionally.

  • Appreciate the importance of aesthetics in storytelling and branding.

  • Solve problems creatively, whether on a canvas or in a marketing campaign.

I often reflect on how art mirrors the process of building a brand. Both art and building a brand or business require:

  1. A strong vision that guides the process.

  2. An understanding of the audience and their desires.

  3. The ability to adapt and refine based on feedback.

Lessons from the Studio

Selling art isn’t just about creation; it’s about creating meaningful connections with people who want a piece of you in their home. This principle translated seamlessly into marketing, where the goal is to connect brands with their audiences in authentic and impactful ways. By combining creativity with strategy, I’ve been able to:

  • Help businesses tell their stories through compelling visuals.

  • Build emotional connections that drive customer loyalty.

  • Elevate brands by integrating design elements that inspire trust and engagement.

Website Design and SEO: Bridging Creativity and Functionality

Helping Local Businesses Thrive

The pandemic underscored the importance of a strong digital presence for businesses. Many local businesses that relied on foot traffic struggled to reach their customers. This is where website design and SEO became critical tools in my toolkit.

For example, I worked with a local restaurant to optimize their website for search engines, ensuring their customers could easily find updated menus, delivery options, and special promotions. By improving site usability and adding engaging content, the restaurant maintained customer loyalty and even attracted new patrons during an incredibly challenging time.

What is Keyword Optimization?

Keyword optimization involves identifying the words and phrases your target audience is searching for and incorporating them into your website and content. This helps search engines connect your offerings with what users are actively seeking.

Core SEO Strategies

In my work, I focused on:

  • Keyword Optimization: Identifying the terms customers searched for and integrating them naturally into content.

  • Local SEO: Enhancing visibility in local search results through Google My Business and location-specific keywords.

  • Content Creation: Developing blog posts, menu updates, and promotional content that engaged audiences.

This combination of creativity and functionality delivered results and built lasting partnerships with local businesses.

Expanding Expertise: Early Agency Projects

Laying the Groundwork for Lūmaix

With the success of early projects, I launched my agency to expand on these efforts. We worked on diverse campaigns that demonstrated the power of strategic marketing. While we continued to service clients in food and beverage and hospitality and event venues, we also undertook two projects that were near and dear to me:

  • Public Service Announcements: Partnering with local organizations to design and execute campaigns that addressed how to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic safely, while also making the community aware of their needs.

  • Art Meets Strategy: Collaborating with a professional artist, we leveraged targeted social media advertising to introduce their work to a national audience. This effort increased visibility and connected the artist with collectors across the country.

These experiences we had in our agency solidified the core mission of Lūmaix: to empower SMBs, entrepreneurs, and creators with strategies that are as creative as they are effective.

Looking Ahead: The Foundation of Lūmaix and Continued Innovation

Adapting to Change

The marketing world is ever-changing, and these early projects taught me the importance of adaptability. Whether it was pivoting campaigns during a pandemic or embracing new technologies, the ability to evolve became central to my approach.
